Success Story: Kamarul Sheik – From Farmer to Aspiring Agricultural Entrepreneur through SACP Training Background
Kamarul Sheik lives in Punbnbari village, Kachua Upazila, Bagerhat district, with his father, mother, wife, and two children. The family relies on farming for their livelihood. Kamarul owns 99 acres of land, cultivating a variety of vegetables and seasonal crops such as banana, date, sweet pumpkin, and brinjal. He is particularly passionate about growing non-toxic, safe vegetables.
Training Participation
Kamarul Sheik participated in the “Postharvest and Primary Processing” training under the Small Holder Agricultural Competitiveness Project (SACP), funded by the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) with support from the Ashraf Foundation.
The training offered both theoretical and hands-on knowledge about agricultural marketing, postharvest handling, and primary processing of vegetables and fruits. It not only enhanced Kamarul’s skills but also enabled his family to learn and apply modern agricultural techniques.
Impact of Training
Skill Development: Before the training, Kamarul’s family had limited exposure to modern farming methods and marketing strategies. Post-training, they are proficient in innovative cultivation, postharvest handling, and basic processing of crops.
Entrepreneurial Mindset: The program encouraged participants to identify market gaps and explore entrepreneurial opportunities. Kamarul has developed a clear vision of becoming an agricultural entrepreneur.
Knowledge Sharing: Kamarul actively shares his knowledge with fellow villagers, teaching them improved cultivation techniques and promoting community development.
Business Awareness: He gained insights into managing a farm-based business, optimizing postharvest processes, and reaching broader markets.
Challenges and Support Needed
Despite his motivation, Kamarul faces financial constraints that prevent him from fully launching his entrepreneurial venture. With financial support from Sheikh Omar Farooq, he would be able to establish his business confidently and sustainably.
Training Outcomes
The SACP training successfully:
Highlighted key postharvest and processing challenges
Helped participants understand agricultural marketing gaps and potential interventions
Fostered entrepreneurial thinking and practical application among farmers
The program concluded with an interactive closing session, where participants expressed their gratitude to the Ashraf Foundation and SACP-DAM for their valuable support.
Conclusion
Kamarul Sheik’s journey demonstrates how targeted, practical training combined with community engagement can transform a traditional farmer into a promising entrepreneur. With additional financial backing, he is well-positioned to expand his agricultural business, improve livelihoods, and inspire other farmers in his village.
